چکیده

Introduction The climate change, the perspective of finishing oil resource and its rising prices led the world to search for an alternative ways of acquiring valuable chemicals and fuels. In recent years technologies of production the most important chemicals for chemical and automotive industries are developed, especially these which use a renewable source of biomass (biodegradable fraction of products, waste and residues from agriculture, forestry and related industries, as well as the biodegradable fraction of industrial and municipal waste) [12, 14, 17]. From chemical point of view a lignocellulosic biomass is composed of cellulose (30-45%), hemicellulose (20-35%) and lignin (10-20%) [1, 12]. Currently, the main attention is paid to furan derivatives and to catalytic processes for production them from the sugars contained in biomass [12]. Furans in the latest “Technology road map, biofuels for transport”, compiled by the International Energy Agency, were classified as prospective biofuels [15]. Compounds such as furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be obtained with good yield through dehydration of monosaccharides, such as hexoses (e.g. fructose) or pentoses (e.g. xylose) in the presence of various catalysts [14].

Effect of Calcination Rate on Performance of Co-precipitated Cu-MgO Catalyst in Hydrogenation of Furfural

Co-precipitated Cu-MgO catalysts were prepared and evaluated for the gas-phase hydrogenation of furfural. The effect of heating rate at the calcination step was studied by comparing the performance of three catalysts prepared via the same procedure but calcined at different heating rates. The results established that altering the heating rate could influence the structural properties of the cat...

Hydroconversion of Furfural over Cu-Cr/SiO2 Nanocatalysts: A Comparative Study

Furfural is one of the most promising chemical platforms with bright perspective with respect to the production of biobased chemicals and fuels from lignocellulosic material. Globally, the majority of this biomass derived chemical is converted into furfuryl alcohol, a building block in polymers industry. The vapor-phase hydrogenation of furfural over copper species dispersed on two types of sil...

THF co - solvent enhances hydrocarbon fuel precursor yields from lignocellulosic biomass †

A novel single phase co-solvent system using tetrahydrofuran (THF) promotes hydrolysis of maple wood to sugars, sugar dehydration, and lignin extraction simultaneously and achieves higher overall yields of the fuel precursors furfural, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and levulinic acid (LA) than previously reported from biomass. In a one-pot reaction, we obtained yields of 86% furfural, 21% HMF,...
